STANLEY A. SMITH / FILM & TV COMPOSER
An L.A. native, who grew up in Compton, California, Stanley A. Smith began playing and performing at a very young age. With a house full of musicians and singers, his Mother played piano for Double Rock Baptist Church and sang along with his Father in the church choir. Stanley can't remember a time when there wasn't a musical presence in the Smith home.
Preparing early to pursue his dream of Composing- Stanley studied music at California State University-Long Beach, where he obtained a Bachelors of Music Degree. While attending CSULB, he also worked as a Songwriter & Staff Producer at TBA Records. Working with various artists on the label, Smith had the opportunity to hone in on his writing, playing & producing skills, which eventually lead to several of his productions making their way on to the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts, while still in school. In addition to writing & producing Stanley also toured with Jeffrey Osborne, Cheryl Lynn, Caron Wheeler (Soul II Soul) & The Boys. Continuing to build his resume, from Remix’s to Record Production, Stanley’s songs were also making their way into various Film & TV shows and on to Soundtracks. Smith was even sought out by Grammy Award-winning Producer David Foster. Stanley worked closely with David on various productions from Paul Anka & Lionel Richie to Jordan Hill- eventually garnering Co-Producing Credit alongside Foster on his 143/Atlantic Label.
Shortly thereafter Stanley began to transition from records to composing theatrical music full time. He found himself working on what would turn out to be several award winning & critically acclaimed independent feature films such as: "Catfish In Black Bean Sauce", "The Visit" &"Constellation”. It was "Indy" films that gave him his scoring start and quickly led to his first wide theatrical release, the Screen-Gems feature, "The Gospel". Opening at an impressive #5 at the box office. "It was exciting to be part of such a musically creative project", Smith notes about “The Gospel”, "The balancing act of merging traditional underscore with an All-Star Gospel Cast and Soundtrack".
As for the smaller screen, Stanley was ecstatic when he was hired to create the original score for the groundbreaking, “The Bernie Mac Show”. As the series Composer & Writer of the Main Title Theme Song, Stanley worked on the award winning Fox series all 5 seasons, composing over 100 episodes. Stanley often reminisces about the show and what eventually became a close friendship with the “Mac-Man-Bernie Mac. With an array of live musicians, his weekly score not only drove the emotion but also created a unique sound for the show that truly echoed Bernie Mac's personality and style.
Over the years, Stanley has scored a variety of projects from the popular AMC/Mad Men-Unilever Brands National Ad Campaign (Dove, Vaseline, Breyers, Klondike, Hellmanns & Suave) to the award winning BET series “Let’s Stay Together”, as well as 100 episodes of the TBS Syndicated series “Are We There Yet?” produced by & starring Ice Cube. With over 250 episodes of TV under his belt, Smith has also had the privilege of writing the Theme Songs for all of these shows as well. A multi-instrumentalist and one of few African American Film & TV Composers, Stanley notes how important it is to him to have his music encompass a wide range of styles. Be it music for a Comedy, Action, Funky Urban or Dramatic Score- Film, TV, Web Series or Ad Campaign; he is inspired by the challenge of creating music that is as unique and individual as the project itself.
